Notes: 1) Make sure that you write your partner comments/notes on the back of your paper if you are the outer circle partner; 2) Please try to have some new people in the inner circle, challenge yourself to speak up for your partnership; 3) Don’t forget to turn in your outer circle sheet
-->The questions are on the overhead slides, but here they are in case there's a problem:
1. Describe the four basic steps for a nonviolent campaign, as outlined by King. How do these steps relate to the notion of civil disobedience?
2. According to Dr. King, does direct action hinder negotiation? Explain.
3. Dr. King describes what a just laws look like. Additionally, he explains at length some ways in which laws can be unjust. Using King’s description of just vs. unjust law, create a “just law rubric” or “just law checklist”. ( Be sure to examine what it means for a law to be just “on it’s face but not in application”)
4. Explain King’s question “Is organized religion too inextricably bound to the status quo to save our nation and world?” Though he poses this as a question, he is making a statement. What is he claiming about organized religion? In what way is this criticism still relevant today?
5. In what ways does Dr. King’s letter reflect Thoreau’s ideas of civil disobedience? Where do you see Thoreau’s influence in King’s work? Why might this be important for us to notice?
